Everyone has a garden story. I’d love to tell yours.
Gardening with Doug
I could use your ‘Limbaugh Legacy Potato Top’ tomato seeds
I wrote a Facebook post about the ‘Limbaugh Legacy Potato Top’ which went viral. People from all over the world are interested in the most famous Pittsburgh heirloom tomato.
Since the year 2000 I’ve given away the seeds and plants of the tomato.
Info on Steve Biggs from TOG 9/7/25
My friend Steve Biggs was on the radio show on Sunday September 7th, 2025 talking about his book “Grow Olives Where You Think You Can’t.”
Monarchs and hummingbirds visit the garden
I was so excited to see two monarchs flying around and enjoying the tithonia (Mexican sunflower) ‘Torch.’
It’s one of my favorite plants for pollinators. Tithonia is a half hardy annual, meaning it takes a hard freeze to kill it at the end of the season.
‘Torch’ is a 1951 All America Selection which can get 15 feet tall. Even though it’s a sun lover, the plant will bloom just about anywhere and needs nothing from the gardener.
Mine are started from seed in April and transplanted to the garden in mid-May.
I only saw the hummingbird for an instant as it perched on a tomato cage.
S4E12 Visit a home gardener with a passion for growing food
It's the season four finale of In Doug's Garden by Davey Tree. I visit a home gardener who is passionate about growing fruit and vegetables. The greenhouse is filled with a new planting experiment, fertilizing containers, planting peas and lettuce along with a deer resistant beautiful shrub. Rob Kruljac from The Davey Tree Expert Company explains what gets pruned now, what doesn't and how to make proper pruning cuts on your trees. Thanks for watching the show this season!
S4E11 Visit the Hilltop Urban Farm which helps their community in many ways.
This week Doug visits Hilltop Urban Farm which provides produce and much more for the local community. Doing some fall planting in the vegetable garden. There are two plants you should grow. Rob Kruljac from Davey Tree discusses spotted lanternfly and aphids.
How to keep tomatoes healthy, Doug interviewed for the Washington Post
I had a great talk with Kate Morgan from the Washington Post about how to keep tomatoes happy and healthy through the summer.
I discuss fungal issues and other problems with her and explain how to deal with them.
