FREE PAW PAW TASTING SUNDAY 9/13/26 5PM BALANCE BREWERY
Paw paws are a wonderful native fruit.
Join me for a Free Paw Paw Pop Up Tasting and Seed Collection event this Sunday (9/13/26) 5 p.m. at Balance Brewery located in Ross at 2257 Babcock Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15237.
The family friendly space will give you a chance to taste native paw paw fruit courtesy of my friend Julie A. Harrilla.
It was a banner year for her trees, producing hundreds of pounds of fruit. We'll save the seeds and you're also welcome to take some with you to plant.
The native tree has a long and rich history in America. Indigenous Americans taught settlers about the custard like flesh of the fruit which some say tastes like a cross between a banana and a mango. George Washington was a big fan and when Lewis and Clark couldn't find any game, their party survived on the fruit.
Paw paws are one of the last seasonal crops as they can't be picked early, don't ship well and only last a few days after being harvested.
A few years ago Julie came to an event I was hosting and left a bag of her paw paws. I shared them that day with lots of paw paw fanatics and we all agreed they were the best we'd ever tasted. Every season since, she's donated her paw paws for this pop up event.
The Revival Chili food truck will be also be at the event, they serve great food.
Hope to see you there, it's going to be fun.
Iām giving away 40 pounds of paw paws!
